Uli Needs You"Uli," a rescue dog, desperately needs your help!

She was adopted July 3rd, but now a week later, we are in a battle to save her!

The weekend had started out so wonderfully for Uli! She was a sweet and shy rescue accepted into a warm and loving home on the eve of a major holiday. Unfortunately, her happiness quickly turned to horror when she broke her leash after being startled by a firecracker!

Uli started the weekend off early bound for the animal shelter after someone dumped her at a local school (those are the pics you see of her in the car.) Due to the summer holiday, the shelter was full, so Uli immediately went into rescue. Her foster mom, TIna (a member of Dallas Wild Life), opened her arms to the young Red Heeler despite having plans to go out-of-town the next day. Not having time to arrange for a pet sitter, Uli was quickly outfitted with a sturdy harness, a new name tag and a new leash. The plan was to arrive at a dude ranch near the Brazos River for an evening with a small group of friends in the great outdoors hundreds of miles from the big city. What dog could turn down a little barbecue?

HEADED FOR SAFETY

Before dusk, Uli and her new mom were headed for their vehicle with plans to go for a short drive away from the ranch. Unfortunately they didnt make it. Off in the distance, someone unexpectedly lit a firecracker. Uli jumped and the clasp broke releasing her to make a break for the woods. For the next two nights a search team, headed by Tina and her son Chris, combed the woods and waterway looking for Uli to no avail. Prevailing conditions prevented the search crew from continuing the search into the third day. The group of friends finally gave in driving back to Dallas where they resorted to meditation and prayer - but not before passing out flyers to neighboring ranches and enlisting the help of one very thoughtful ranch in particular close by. This family promised to continue the hunt while Tina and others returned to work in Dallas.

After six days and nights, lost in the woods in 100-degree heat, and without food, an injured "Uli" drug herself ten miles to the front door of a rancher's home begging for help. She had been hit by a car in her mad dash to "safety." Left by the side of the road to fend for herself, Uli somehow survived, only driven by her love of people. The ninety-year-old rancher couldn't have been more surprised to see the stoic little girl camping out on his doorstep. He examined her, called the number on her identification tag and put her in a spare dog kennel to await the arrival of her ride home. Uli had a sixth sense about how to pick good people and this rancher was a big dog lover with several dogs of his own. She didn't have to wait long before she was back in the safety of Tina and Chris's arms.

After an emergency vet visit, it was revealed that the vehicle that struck her broke both of the bones in her front leg, the radias and the ulna. This was the worst possible type of break. But what really mattered to Tina and Chris was that she was alive! The bad news was that it was going to take $1,500 to fix her up, something Tina, who is a "starving artist" and muscian, didn't have. Currently Uli has a temporary splint on since there are no bones in her leg to support her. Yes, she is in pain but she is very bravely stomaching it.

HOW YOU CAN HELP!

Uli now needs our help to save her leg from amputation. This will require diagnostic surgery. Uli would like to spend many years in the future hiking the trails and forests with her new family but she really needs four legs to do that. Can you help? We hope so! The rescue group and Tina hope that our friends and family can find 100 people at just $5 to $10 each to raise the money for her surgery. Tina has already paid $500 for the splint. With 500 people on our membership roll, this is certainly a reachable dream. If you can help, please use the "donate" button on this page to make your contribution.
